Client: Pudong City

Title: Pudong Park

Location: Shanghai, China

Description: Pudong is the "London Docklands" of a rapidly expanding and westernised Shanghai: its centrepiece is a new public park the size of Hyde Park in London.

Land Use Consultants won a limited competition for strategic masterplanning and invited Jestico + Whiles to produce conceptual designs for the many structures within the park. These range from simple, utilitarian buildings to 500-seat restaurants, food hall, exhibition buildings, meeting places, bridges and a biosphere. Landscape and architecture have been considered together to create spaces and places that are varied and rich in texture, scale and meaning.

Over a million people are expected to visit the park every week. The large numbers of people, salty ground conditions, atmospheric pollution and the humid weather have shaped our approach to the buildings.
