When Independiente, a new, independently owned record label, acquired the Old Drill hall in Chiswick, it appointed Jestico + Whiles as Architects and Project Managers.
The design approach is to enhance the inherent qualities of the existing hall, whilst inserting new enclosures within it to house the functions of the record company. New glass fronted acoustic 'boxes' house artist and repertoire personnel at high level within the space; a glass block bridge forms the link between these rooms. The interior finishes are selected for their textural qualities as much as their colour; for example, galvanised glazed screens, exposed structural steelwork, rusted steel plates as cladding, steel reinforcement bars as balustrading and self coloured roughcast plaster to finished walls.
