Title: Hermitage Basin
Location: London, UK
Description: Half a mile from Tower Bridge and derelict for 40 years, this inner city site now provides 80 dwellings and public access to the waterside.
Although little remained of the old structures which once surrounded the Basin, the new housing reflects the imprint of the original buildings.
Two new four-storey crescent shaped buildings redefine an historic dock, enclosing a small urban courtyard with a new six storey tower to the north. A tree-lined path descends to a waterside street and a terrace of houses, each with its own garden, enclosed by the original dock wall.
The new dwellings at Hermitage Basin bring into use a derelict site, restore a glimpse of the area’s history and create a special sense of place for the community.
