Jestico + Whiles’ scheme for the Community Housing Association revives an existing social housing complex to provide 104 apartments in a Clerkenwell conservation area. The proposals transform the historic Gray’s Inn Residences by juxtaposing new elements with refurbished buildings and restored Victorian facades.
The original terrace had fallen into disrepair and the standard of accommodation is unsuitable for contemporary requirements. The terrace’s impressive front façade is retained and refurbished, along with its prominent corner building. An entirely new block will be constructed behind. The new insertions are deliberately contemporary yet respectful of the historic architecture.
