The Foundling Museum occupies a Grade II listed building with eighteenth century interiors re-constructed from the original Foundling Hospital. As well as refurbishing the historic 1930s building and its interiors Jestico + Whiles made a number of contemporary interventions, including an extension in a rear light well, a glazed access ramp and modern gallery spaces.
The new Museum opened in June 2004 to display nationally significant art works and to tell the story of the Foundling Hospital and its fascinating tale of eighteenth century philanthropy and its association with the composer G F Handel. The historic art collection is supplemented by the Handel Study Centre, a Temporary Gallery and the Clore Education Centre, providing an upgraded museum with improved security and environmental standards.
