Much of existing regeneration in the Royal Docks of London has left an unrelenting dockside aesthetic of continuous railings and barriers that provide little possibility of interaction between people and water. Sited at one end of the Olympic Rowing Course, the Jestico + Whiles masterplan for Royal Quay challenges this approach by bringing water into the site, interrupting the linear dock edge walk, and actually sitting buildings in the water.
Over 440 new homes are arranged in ten buildings around a central urban square, orientated to maximise views of the dock, whilst carefully setting the listed Victorian Gallions Hotel in a contemporary urban context.
