Title: Ericsson Palac

Location: Prague, Czech Republic

Description: Winner - Czech Restoration Award 1995

Nowhere except in the decayed cities of Eastern Europe are historic buildings so threatened by destructive development. The Ericsson Palace, in the centre of Prague, itself dates from the twelfth century. To conserve the remaining fabric, it was essential to restore a mix of small-scale uses to the buildings.

The design is influenced by a process of meticulous investigation and probing which has revealed successive layers of historic fabric including an invaluable fourteenth century wall painting concealed behind a Baroque mural. Carefully repaired, and with the benefit of our own interventions, the buildings provide shops, workspace and housing, bringing back the variety of activities vital to the character of the city.
