Client: Community Housing Group

Title: Timber Wharf

Location: London, UK

Description: Jestico + Whiles’ design for Community Housing Group integrates 87 affordable dwellings with over 2000sqm of commercial space on a significant ‘brownfield’ site in Hackney. The site served as a timber yard during the 19th century and was occupied by a series of dilapidated warehouses before its regeneration..

Keyworker dwellings, general and special-needs flats, and large family houses are grouped around a quiet internal courtyard and canalside garden. Start-up business units are accessed off a new working mews’ parallel to the viaduct and have been designed to shield the residential courtyard from future noise from East London Line. Larger commercial units and a canalside café-restaurant animate the street level on Kingsland Road. This complex mix of functions is united using a contemporary architectural language of insulated render, Western Red Cedar boarding, stack bonded brickwork, anodised aluminium cladding and galvanised steelwork.
